Interview with Karlina Caune- false reality

The day before I met Karlina, I played an evening performance in Dailes theater. I heard loud hearty laughter during the play. That kind of laughter that captivates everyone, the laughter that is challenging actors as well.  At the end of the play, when the lights in audience hall came on, I saw the author of this laughter. In the fifth row. Young, smiling, beautiful woman. Karlina Caune. This is how I „met” her. Therefore the laughter was the first thing we talked about next morning.

You have truly hearty and sticky laughter… My colleagues say that they use to hear me in the audience hall as well. Finally I had a chance to understand that feeling when you have to play accompanied by laughter like this.

Yes. My relatives use to reprove me. Lately I watched „One flew over the cuckoo’s nest” accompanied by my granny. Granny kept punching me- „shh, stop laughing, I am getting embarrassed!”.

„Your imagination starts to spin as you see an advertisement presenting the dress- ladies in beautiful dresses, in a perfect environment… In some way, buying this dress you also hope to obtain the offered „image” and the idea you want to be”.

Let us talk about „unreal world” – about false reality of social media. I have thought about the ways I could change it in my publications, to show the other side of the coin- to find out what is hiding beneath the public image journalists create, what is hiding beneath beautiful photo shoots etc. However, once, when I was eagerly discussing it,  my friend who is a journalist told me- „Darta, people are not willing to see the reality. They just want to obtain that „dream” which is opposite their problems, negations of their lives. They have enough of that, so they just do not want to „eat” information like this in their spare time. The time, which they have saved for entertainment and browsing magazines”.

Exactly!  Moreover, magazine is getting paid for advertisements, so they tend to reflect the contents that corresponds with the  idea of advertiser. Your imagination starts to spin as you see an advertisement presenting the dress- ladies in beautiful dresses, in a perfect environment… In some way, buying this dress you also hope to obtain the offered „image” and the idea you want to be.

You started your career around year 2010…

Yes, approximately…

Now, looking back about seven years later- have you noticed any significant changes in fashion industry?

Yes, quite a lot. First of all, social media- it has changed the rules of the game significantly. It was not my duty to maintain the social platform and marketing when I started this job. As regards marketing- it is self promotion- you have to build your image in order to get customers. I would like to mention „adidas sisters” [Michelle and Regina Yuen- auth.] or Kardashians as an example. They would not be even the half way they are now without self promotion and social platform. In comparison, so called „old models”, like myself have gone through all the stages of castings. I believe, I was one of the last ones who has gone through all the habitual routine- you start with a show twice a year- New York fashion week, London, Milan, Paris. It takes roughly one month. This is the way the career was built when I started- by collaborating with magazines and trying to get along with the „great players” during this month. Now everything happens through social media. You have all the chances if you are tall, beautiful girl having two million followers. However, my conviction is that this trend has to change. I know Latvian girl who is a model and she is just 18 years old; she has her own log and 300 thousand followers. Well, promoters of a large show decided to give away their products- bags in this case to all the models having the highest number of followers on instagram. Their hope was that these girls will use the bags and post pictures in their accounts. , they did not think of one thing. Followers of these young models are mainly youngsters and teenagers cannot afford haute couture goods.

So, it is much more valuable to address this proposal to a girl with 7 thousand followers who are able to afford the items you offer. The industry seems to start understanding it, so the changes are on their way.

There are so many different trends in fashion world these days- young girls, models in their fifties, too thin as well as plus size models. And somewhere in between all those slogans about healthy body and true reflection of reality…

In this case I have a question- what is that „genuine” reality? It changes along with the point of view. I would like to mention a problem, which I have noticed among women- mutual judgement.  You judge and declare negative views of others knowing actually nothing. When we talk about healthy body- what is it really? We are all born different, owning different body „formula”. We do not grow up the same; I have plenty of abnormally thin friends who are not models trying to gain weight desperately.  They exercise, they have special diets. However, there are some others who consume just healthy foods, but they are having bigger breasts and body by nature. So, there is no way we can classify all people in the same way. The world enjoys being stressed. My belief is that each and every girl and woman should be taught to love themselves as they are. And avoid judging each other. Think about one thing- how a man sees another man he does not know personally? And how a woman does it?

„When we talk about healthy body- what is it really? We are all born different, owning different ody „formula (..) My belief is that each and every girl and woman should be taught  to love themselves as they are. And avoid judging each other”.

I have noticed that mainly all the reproofs come from people around us, from the ones we know.

About reproving. One of my friends told me a nice concept lately. You may reprove somebody only twice. Shortly- a person might not hear you or get the idea when you say it for the first time therefore you

have a chance to do it once again and then you are done. He heard you after the second time and now it is his or her choice to hold by or not. One more interesting thing. Singer Alicia Keys stopped using makeup. Well, I understand that there are men who consider that a woman should always look like a doll and dress up for their pleasure. But in this case I noticed many hostile women comments, like- „you are embarrassing other women, so use a mascara at least! „. It made me think of mutual acceptance among women. I truly admire women who wake up earlier in a morning to get themselves ready for the day- to do hair and afterwards stay perfectly ladylike all day long.

Tell me about your dogs. It is Labrador girl Kato here today. Does she live in Sweden with You?

Yes, it is Latvian dog living in Sweden. Sometimes she flies with me, like this time- visiting my family. I used to have husky named Laikijs, however he has moved to countryside.

There were days my energy was low and I could not get out of the bed when I got pregnant. So, a good friend of mine, living in countryside took care of him. It was truly tough decision that affects your self esteem and self confidence. Dog is a big responsibility and I chose it. Nevertheless, we still meet quite often; I met him yesterday as well.

A big role in the environment You work is played by visuality. Do You have Your favourite photographer?

Yes, I really like Steve McCurry. His portraits and nature scenes are fantastic.

What music do You choose to listen?

One of my all time favourites is Ben Howard, an English musician. It seems to get harder listening to his records as I had a chance to hear him live in concert. It was so intense that the records seem quite pale  now.

Tell me about yourself, about Kate, – which are the brands or goods you choose and use apart from work?

I have friends, a Swedish couple living in USA. They have created their own brand- Ragdoll. The garments they create are unbelievably good- they are not only beautiful, they are brilliantly comfortable. I am so fond of their idea- chick of the spare time. And I do not mean pink sweatpants.  I do not have one specific style overall. Therefore the walls of my place should always be entirely white. I just know- there will follow another repair as I am getting tired of same things quite often.

Our conversation continues touching different themes. Karlīna gets several calls from friends who are eager to meet her before she gets away the next day. She still has to manage to visit mum’s home in Jelgava as well as organize a birthday party from distance for her boyfriend awaiting her home in Stockholm.

Then she puts on her winter coat, grabs Kato’s lead and leaves promising to „be back soon”.
